Separate Service Since 1947

Voice: Since its inception as an independent and separate service in 1947, the Air Force has participated in numerous contingencies around the globe.

Action: Show the following text over globe one at a time, as mentioned in the narration:

Voice: Air and space forces have continually exploited the speed, range, precision, and flexibility of air and space power.

Action: Fade out globe and images of aircraft as the Air Force symbol zooms to center of screen. The old symbol cross fades with new AF symbol and the title, Expeditionary Air and Space Force, shows across the bottom of the screen.

Voice: However, personnel and financial cutbacks along with increasing worldwide obligations have impacted the Air Force’s ability to effectively meet its commitments. The Air Force has now adopted a concept called the Air and Space Expeditionary Force, or AEF.

Action: Fade in collage of fighter planes, a man sitting in a cockpit, soldiers swimming to shore, a pilot dressed in pilot gear, and the tail of a plane. Fade out the title, Expeditionary Air and Space Force. Fade in the following text along the bottom of the screen. Fade covers of Air Force Doctrine 1-1, National Military Strategy, and National Security Strategy documents in and out as mentioned.

Voice: The AEF concept embodies the Air Force’s 21st century vision to organize, train, equip, and sustain its future Total Force—Active, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve—to meet the security challenges of the 21st Century. It is important to understand this concept and its relationship not only to Air Force doctrine but also to the national military strategy and national security strategy. The material presented in this lesson will enable you to understand how the Air Force is restructuring and reorganizing its forces to meet the demands of the 21st century.
