Reports say several people have been killed in a suspected terrorist attack in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Details of the attack in the port city of Yanbu were not immediately clear. Yanbu is an industrial city along the Red Sea, about 150 kilometers north of Jeddah.

A statement by the Saudi Interior Ministry broadcast on Riyadh television said several assailants entered a Saudi business and opened fire on Saudi and foreign nationals.

News reports quote diplomats in Riyadh as saying Americans may be among the victims. Other reports say attackers may have detonated a bomb.

Saudi Arabia has been battling a year-long wave of Islamist militancy, targeting mainly foreigners.
