Mr. Bush asked Americans and places of worship to mark the three-day
period with memorial services, prayers and candlelight vigils. He also
invited people around the world to share in the remembrance.
On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial jets, crashing
them into the World Trade Center in New York City; the Pentagon in Arlington,
Virginia, near Washington; and a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed
more than 3,000 people from 80 nations.
