The
Battle of Taji and Battle Command on the Move by
Lieutenant Colonel Edward J. Erickson, U.S. Army, Retired
with Major General Raymond T. Odierno, U.S. Army.
During the Battle of Taji on 16 April 2003, battle
command in the 4th Infantry Division was exercised
in a technically new style nicknamed Battle Command
on the Move that, in effect, frees the commander to
go to the fight wherever it might be on the battlefield.
No longer is he tied to a headquarters at a fixed location.
Nationalism,
Sectarianism, and the Future of the U.S. Presence in
Post-Saddam Iraq by
W.Andrew Terrill, July 2003. The author addresses the
critical questions
involved in understanding the background of Iraqi national
identity and the ways in which it may evolve in the
future to either the favor or detriment of the United
States. He pays particular attention to the issue
of Iraqi sectarianism and the emerging role of the
Shi’ite Muslims, noting the power of an emerging
but fractionalized clergy. This report includes policy
recommendations for U.S. military and civilian decisionmakers
that helps to illuminate the complex subjects of
Iraqi nationalism and sectarianism and their relevance
to the U.S. presence in Iraq.
The
Ministry of Defence published on 7 July an initial
report - Operations
in Iraq: First Reflections - setting
out the role of the UK Armed Forces during the main
period of hostilities in Op Telic and drawing early
conclusions . Detailed analysis continues and is expected
to lead to a full report to be published before the
end of 2003.
Weapons
Systems introduced since Desert Storm (2001) that are
available now (2003), 'As
we again prepare to go to war in Iraq many new systems
have been introduced that have impacted our rapid response
time, our lethality, and our precision. What follows
are several of the significant new weapons systems that
have been deployed, including a description of their
capabilities. The listing is illustrative rather than
complete and, to the most part, does not include system
upgrades and prototypes.', National Defense University
